The film follows two Secret Service agents, James West (played by Will Smith) and Artemus Gordon (played by Kevin Kline), who are assigned to investigate a series of mysterious disappearances of prominent scientists in the American Old West. Their investigation leads them to the villainous Dr. Arliss Loveless (played by Kenneth Branagh), a former Confederate Army officer who plans to overthrow the United States government.
Loveless, who is confined to a wheelchair after losing his lower body in the Civil War, seeks to use his technological prowess to create a giant steam-powered mechanical spider. With the spider, he plans to kidnap President Ulysses S. Grant (played by Kevin Kline in a dual role) during the unveiling of the first transcontinental railroad and hold him for ransom.
As West and Gordon race against time to stop Loveless and his diabolical plot, they encounter a series of challenges and obstacles. Along the way, they are joined by Rita Escobar (played by Salma Hayek), a beautiful singer and Loveless’ former lover, who agrees to help them in exchange for her freedom.
The trio faces off against Loveless and his henchmen in a climactic showdown aboard the giant mechanical spider. With the help of Gordon’s ingenious inventions and West’s quick wit and sharpshooting skills, they manage to defeat Loveless and save President Grant.
In the end, West and Gordon are hailed as heroes, and Loveless is presumed dead after his defeat. Rita decides to join West and Gordon on their future adventures, forming a new team of crime-fighting allies.
