The movie follows the story of Danny (played by Jet Li), a man who has been raised like a dog by Bart (played by Bob Hoskins), a ruthless and abusive loan shark. Trained from a young age to be a deadly fighter, Danny is kept on a tight leash by Bart, who uses him to collect debts and intimidate his enemies.

One day, during a botched collection, Danny escapes from Bart’s control and finds refuge with Sam (played by Morgan Freeman), a blind piano tuner, and his stepdaughter Victoria (played by Kerry Condon). With their help, Danny begins to experience life outside of Bart’s brutal world and learns what it means to be human.
