The film begins with James Bond successfully retrieving a stolen cache of money in Spain. During the mission, however, he is wounded by a bullet and is forced to undergo surgery. Despite being advised to take it easy, Bond is soon back in action.
In London, Bond is assigned to protect Elektra King, the daughter of a murdered oil tycoon, Sir Robert King. Bond investigates the murder, which leads him to a terrorist named Renard, who has a bullet lodged in his brain that makes him immune to pain. Renard’s plan is to cause a nuclear meltdown in a Russian nuclear facility, which would greatly increase the value of Elektra’s oil pipeline by destroying her competition.
Bond travels to Azerbaijan to investigate, where he encounters Elektra and her head of security, Davidov. Bond also meets Dr. Christmas Jones, a nuclear physicist working at the nuclear facility. Bond discovers that Elektra has been colluding with Renard, and that she plans to use the nuclear meltdown to increase her own wealth.
Bond manages to thwart Renard’s plan, but Elektra captures him and reveals her true intentions. She seeks revenge on her father, who had abandoned her to Renard years ago. Bond manages to escape with Dr. Jones’ help and pursues Elektra to her own oil pipeline.
In a climactic showdown, Bond confronts Elektra on her submarine. He manages to disable the nuclear warhead and kills Elektra in self-defense. Bond and Dr. Jones escape the exploding submarine just in time.
In the aftermath, Bond is commended for his actions, and Dr. Jones suggests they celebrate Christmas together. Bond declines, saying that he never catches on quickly, but eventually kisses her.
