The Wonder

The Wonder concludes on a bittersweet note with Anna surviving her fasting ordeal but being separated from her devout Catholic community. After determining that Anna was being secretly fed by her family to maintain the fasting myth, nurse Lib Wright rescues Anna by setting a fire as a distraction, then boarding a ship with her to start a new life. The ending implies that though Anna’s intentions were sincere, her family and priests exploited her faith to profit from her perceived miraculous fasting. Lib freed Anna from their manipulation and enabled her to embrace a future where her spirituality and agency could develop freely. The finale mourns Anna’s loss of innocence and separation from her home but suggests hope through Lib’s compassionate intervention. By the final scene on the ship, Anna is slowly rebuilding her health while taking in the wide horizons before her, liberated at last to chart her own path beyond the confines of the small, restrictive village that nearly destroyed her in the name of faith.
