The story begins in 1899 New York City, where Alexander Hartdegen (played by Guy Pearce), a brilliant but eccentric inventor, is mourning the death of his fiancée, Emma (played by Sienna Guillory), who was killed in a tragic accident. Determined to change the past and save Emma, Alexander becomes obsessed with the concept of time travel.
Using his scientific knowledge, Alexander constructs a time machine and embarks on a journey through time, hoping to prevent Emma’s death and rewrite history. His first stop is the year 2030, where he encounters a futuristic New York City skyline and a society transformed by technological advancements.
However, Alexander’s attempts to alter the past are thwarted when he discovers that time is immutable and cannot be changed. Despite his best efforts, Emma’s death remains a fixed point in time, leading Alexander to despair and disillusionment.
Undeterred, Alexander continues his journey through time, traveling thousands of years into the future to witness the evolution of human civilization. Along the way, he encounters various societies and cultures, from a primitive tribe struggling to survive in a post-apocalyptic wasteland to a futuristic utopian society ruled by an enigmatic race known as the Eloi.
As Alexander explores the future, he becomes embroiled in a conflict between the Eloi and their mortal enemies, the Morlocks, a race of subterranean creatures who prey on the Eloi for food. With the help of Mara (played by Samantha Mumba), an Eloi woman, Alexander discovers the truth about the origins of the Morlocks and their connection to humanity’s downfall.
In a climactic showdown, Alexander confronts the Morlock leader, the Über-Morlock (played by Jeremy Irons), who reveals that Emma’s death was a necessary sacrifice to preserve the fabric of time. Realizing the futility of his quest to change the past, Alexander makes a selfless decision to sacrifice himself to save Mara and the future of humanity.
As the time machine hurtles through time and space, Alexander witnesses the birth of the universe and gains a newfound understanding of the nature of time and destiny. In the end, he embraces his role as a guardian of time, accepting his fate and finding peace in the knowledge that some things are beyond his control.
