The movie is set in October 1991 in Gloucester, Massachusetts, a town heavily reliant on the fishing industry. Captain Billy Tyne (played by George Clooney) and his crew, including Bobby Shatford (played by Mark Wahlberg), David “Sully” Sullivan (played by William Fichtner), and Dale “Murph” Murphy (played by John C. Reilly), are struggling to make ends meet due to a poor fishing season.
Desperate to turn their luck around, Captain Tyne decides to take the Andrea Gail out to sea for one last fishing trip, despite warnings of an approaching storm. Along with several other fishing boats, including the Hannah Boden captained by Linda Greenlaw (played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), the Andrea Gail sets sail into the North Atlantic in search of a lucrative catch of swordfish.
As the crew sets out to sea, they encounter increasingly dangerous weather conditions, culminating in the convergence of three powerful storm systems to create a massive and unprecedented weather event known as “the Perfect Storm.”
