The Object of My Affection

The film follows the story of Nina Borowski (played by Jennifer Aniston), a social worker living in New York City, and George Hanson (played by Paul Rudd), a gay schoolteacher who becomes Nina’s roommate after she breaks up with her boyfriend, Vince (played by John Pankow).

As Nina navigates the ups and downs of single life in the city, she forms a close bond with George, who offers her emotional support and companionship. Despite their differences in sexual orientation, Nina begins to develop romantic feelings for George, leading to a complicated and unconventional relationship between the two.

Meanwhile, George struggles with his own romantic entanglements, as he becomes involved with a handsome but unreliable actor named Dr. Robert Joley (played by Tim Daly). George’s relationship with Robert becomes strained as he grapples with his feelings for Nina and the conflicting desires of his heart.

As Nina and George’s relationship deepens, they face criticism and judgment from their friends and family members, who question the nature of their connection and whether it’s appropriate for them to be living together as roommates. Nina’s best friend, Constance (played by Allison Janney), and her brother, Vince, in particular, express concern about the dynamics of Nina and George’s relationship.

In a series of heartfelt and emotionally charged scenes, Nina and George confront their feelings for each other and the challenges of navigating a romantic relationship that defies societal norms and expectations. They must also grapple with their own insecurities and fears, as they struggle to define the nature of their bond and what it means for their future.

In the end, Nina and George’s relationship reaches a crossroads as they confront the reality of their feelings and the limitations of their connection. While they ultimately decide to remain friends, they acknowledge the depth of their affection for each other and the impact they’ve had on each other’s lives.

“The Object of My Affection” is praised for its thoughtful exploration of love, friendship, and identity, as well as the nuanced performances of its lead actors. It’s a touching and bittersweet tale of two people who find solace and companionship in each other’s company, even as they grapple with the complexities of romance and the expectations of society.
