The story is set in 1951 during the height of the McCarthy era in Hollywood. Peter Appleton (played by Jim Carrey) is a talented but idealistic screenwriter who works for a major film studio. However, his career is derailed when he is accused of being a communist sympathizer and is blacklisted by the studio.
Devastated by the loss of his career and reputation, Peter drives aimlessly along the California coast until he has a car accident and loses consciousness. He wakes up on a beach near the small coastal town of Lawson, suffering from amnesia and unable to remember his past life.
Peter is taken in by the townspeople, who mistake him for Luke Trimble, a local war hero who went missing during World War II and is presumed dead. Peter’s resemblance to Luke, combined with his lack of memory, leads the townspeople to believe that he has returned home after suffering from amnesia for years.
Embracing his new identity as Luke Trimble, Peter begins to rebuild his life in Lawson, forming bonds with the townspeople and getting involved in community activities. He strikes up a romantic relationship with Adele Stanton (played by Laurie Holden), the daughter of Harry Trimble (played by Martin Landau), Luke’s father.
As Peter settles into his new life, he becomes increasingly conflicted about his true identity and the lies he is perpetuating. He struggles with feelings of guilt and impostor syndrome, unsure of whether he deserves the hero worship and admiration of the townspeople.
Meanwhile, back in Hollywood, Peter’s disappearance attracts the attention of federal agents who suspect him of being a communist sympathizer. They launch an investigation into his background, hoping to uncover evidence of his alleged ties to subversive activities.
In a climactic sequence, Peter’s true identity is revealed when his former girlfriend, actress Adele Stanton (played by Amanda Detmer), arrives in Lawson and recognizes him. As Peter confronts the truth about his past and the mistakes he has made, he must decide whether to continue living as Luke Trimble or reclaim his identity as Peter Appleton.
In the end, Peter chooses to embrace his true self and return to Hollywood to face the consequences of his actions. With the support of Adele and the townspeople of Lawson, he resolves to fight against the injustices of the McCarthy era and reclaim his place in the film industry.
