The film is set in the late 19th century and follows Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise), a former Union Army officer who is haunted by his experiences in the Civil War and battles with alcoholism. Algren is hired by a Japanese businessman to train the Imperial Japanese Army in modern warfare techniques to suppress a rebellion by the samurai who oppose the Westernization of Japan.
