The story begins with Sally (Dakota Fanning) and Conrad (Spencer Breslin), two siblings living in a suburban neighborhood with their single mother, Joan (Kelly Preston). Their lives are turned upside down when their mother leaves them in the care of their strict and uptight babysitter, Mrs. Kwan (Amy Hill), while she is away on business.
On a rainy day, the mischievous Cat in the Hat (Mike Myers) arrives at their doorstep, promising to bring fun and excitement into their lives. Despite their initial reluctance, Sally and Conrad agree to let the Cat stay and soon find themselves caught up in a series of wacky and chaotic adventures.
As the Cat wreaks havoc throughout the house, unleashing his magical powers and causing mayhem at every turn, Sally and Conrad must find a way to clean up the mess and restore order before their mother returns home.
However, their efforts are complicated by the interference of their nosy neighbor, Lawrence Quinn (Alec Baldwin), who schemes to expose the Cat’s antics and get rid of him for good.
In the climax of the film, the chaos reaches its peak as the Cat’s mischief spirals out of control, threatening to destroy the house and ruin Sally and Conrad’s chances of setting things right.
Ultimately, Sally and Conrad realize the importance of responsibility and teamwork as they join forces to outsmart Lawrence and restore order to their home. With the help of the loyal family pet, Fish (voiced by Sean Hayes), they manage to defeat Lawrence and send the Cat packing, restoring peace and harmony to their household.
The film ends with Sally, Conrad, and Joan enjoying a happy reunion, grateful for the lessons they have learned and the bonds of family that have been strengthened through their adventures with the Cat in the Hat.
