“Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi” is the second installment in the sequel trilogy of the Star Wars franchise, directed by Rian Johnson. The film continues the story of Rey, Finn, and Poe as they join the Resistance in their struggle against the First Order. Here is a detailed summary of the ending, and it contains spoilers.
Rey and Kylo Ren:
The film explores the connection between Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). Rey hopes to turn Kylo Ren back to the light side of the Force, believing that there is still good in him. Kylo, on the other hand, sees an opportunity to join forces with Rey and bring a new order to the galaxy by eliminating both the Resistance and the First Order’s leadership.
During a confrontation with Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis), Kylo seemingly betrays Rey, leading to Snoke’s death. Kylo then proposes that Rey should join him to rule the galaxy together. Rey, however, refuses, and the two engage in a lightsaber battle over the Skywalker lightsaber, which ultimately breaks in half.
Luke Skywalker’s Sacrifice:
Meanwhile, on the Resistance’s side, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) has become disillusioned with the Jedi Order and is hesitant to help Rey. However, he eventually decides to confront Kylo Ren to allow the remaining members of the Resistance to escape.
In a dramatic showdown on the planet Crait, Luke faces Kylo Ren, buying time for the Resistance to escape. However, it is later revealed that Luke is projecting himself through the Force, and he is not physically present on Crait. The effort to project himself takes a toll on Luke, and he peacefully passes away, becoming one with the Force.
The Resistance’s Escape:
The remaining members of the Resistance, led by Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), manage to escape from Crait using the Millennium Falcon. The film ends with the Resistance in a dire situation, reduced to a small group of survivors, but still hopeful for the future.
The ending of “The Last Jedi” sets the stage for the final installment in the sequel trilogy, “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker,” which was directed by J.J. Abrams and concludes the Skywalker saga.
