The film is set approximately 30 years after the events of “Return of the Jedi” and follows new characters Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) as they become embroiled in the conflict between the Resistance and the First Order.
In the climax of the movie, Rey discovers her connection to the Force and confronts the dark side user Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) on the Starkiller Base, a superweapon capable of destroying entire planets. Finn, a former stormtrooper, and Poe, a Resistance pilot, join the battle against the First Order.
During the lightsaber duel between Rey and Kylo Ren, Rey taps into her Force abilities and ultimately defeats Kylo, leaving him injured and scarred. Meanwhile, the Resistance, with the help of the former smuggler Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca, launches an attack on the Starkiller Base to destroy it.
In the resolution, the Starkiller Base is successfully destroyed, thanks to the efforts of the Resistance. However, Han Solo is killed by his own son, Kylo Ren, during a confrontation on a bridge. Chewbacca witnesses Han’s death and later sets off explosives that severely damage Kylo Ren.
The movie ends with Rey, Chewbacca, and R2-D2 traveling to the planet Ahch-To, where they find Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in self-imposed exile. Rey offers Luke his old lightsaber, seeking his help in the fight against the First Order.
