The film begins with Gordon Smith, a kind-hearted but clumsy mailman, who dreams of becoming a detective. While delivering mail one day, Gordon encounters a neighbor’s dog, a bull mastiff named Spot, who is known for causing chaos in the neighborhood.
Meanwhile, the FBI is in pursuit of a dangerous criminal named Sonny Talia (played by Paul Sorvino), who is involved in a drug trafficking operation. Spot is part of the FBI’s K-9 unit and has been trained to sniff out drugs. However, when Spot accidentally sniffs out a bomb in a drug shipment, Talia orders his henchmen to eliminate the dog.
Spot manages to escape from the custody of the FBI and ends up on Gordon’s mail route. Gordon takes Spot in, unaware of his true identity, and forms a bond with the lovable but mischievous dog. However, Gordon soon discovers Spot’s true identity when he finds a FBI badge and learns about the bounty on Spot’s head.
As Gordon tries to protect Spot from Talia and his henchmen, he also finds himself in over his head when he becomes a target of Talia’s criminal organization. With the help of his friend and neighbor Stephanie (played by Leslie Bibb), Gordon goes on a series of misadventures to outsmart Talia and keep Spot safe.
In a climactic showdown, Gordon and Spot confront Talia and his henchmen in a chaotic and hilarious showdown. With quick thinking and teamwork, Gordon and Spot manage to outwit Talia and his men, leading to their capture by the authorities.
In the end, Gordon decides to adopt Spot as his own pet, realizing that he has formed a special bond with the lovable dog. With Spot by his side, Gordon continues his job as a mailman, but now with a newfound sense of confidence and purpose.
