The movie follows Rudy Duncan (played by Ben Affleck), a former convict who is about to be released from prison after serving a sentence for grand theft auto. Rudy is eager to start a new life and reunite with his pen pal and love interest, Ashley Mercer (played by Charlize Theron), whom he has never met in person.
However, Rudy’s plans are disrupted when his cellmate, Nick Cassidy (played by James Frain), reveals that he has been corresponding with Ashley and has embellished his own image to impress her. Rudy reluctantly agrees to assume Nick’s identity upon his release to finally meet Ashley in person.
Upon arriving at Ashley’s home, Rudy is ambushed by Ashley’s brother, Gabriel (played by Gary Sinise), and his crew of criminals, who mistake him for Nick and coerce him into helping them rob a nearby Indian casino on Christmas Eve. Gabriel believes that Nick has inside knowledge of the casino’s security systems, which will aid in their heist.
Reluctantly going along with the plan to protect himself and Ashley, Rudy finds himself embroiled in a dangerous game of deception and betrayal. As the heist unfolds, tensions rise among the criminals, leading to double-crosses and unexpected twists.
During the robbery, Rudy discovers that Ashley and Gabriel are actually romantically involved and have been manipulating him all along. Feeling betrayed and disillusioned, Rudy decides to turn the tables on Gabriel and his crew, using his wits and resourcefulness to outsmart them.
In a climactic showdown, Rudy manages to outmaneuver Gabriel and his crew, leading to a violent confrontation that results in several deaths. Rudy ultimately emerges victorious and manages to escape with the stolen loot.
In the aftermath of the heist, Rudy reunites with Ashley and decides to leave town with her, hoping to leave their troubled past behind and start anew. However, as they drive away, they are pursued by law enforcement, indicating that their troubles may not be over yet.
