The story begins with Earl Montgomery (played by Martin Lawrence), a hot-headed LAPD officer who is kicked off the force for assaulting his abusive former police partner. Earl struggles to find employment and ends up working as a security guard at a television studio.

Meanwhile, Hank Rafferty (played by Steve Zahn), a well-meaning but clumsy security guard, accidentally witnesses a smuggling operation involving stolen cars and a dangerous gang of criminals. Hank reports the incident to the police, but they dismiss his claims due to his reputation for being accident-prone and unreliable.

When Earl and Hank cross paths at the television studio, they clash over a misunderstanding and end up getting into a brawl, leading to both of them being arrested. While in custody, they discover that they share a common enemy in the form of the smuggling ring, which is led by the ruthless criminal Nash (played by Eric Roberts).

Realizing that they need to work together to clear their names and bring the criminals to justice, Earl and Hank reluctantly team up to uncover the truth behind the smuggling operation. Along the way, they encounter various obstacles and challenges, including corrupt cops, double-crossing informants, and dangerous confrontations with Nash’s henchmen.

In a series of comedic and action-packed sequences, Earl and Hank use their unique skills and personalities to outsmart their adversaries and gather evidence against the smuggling ring. With the help of Earl’s former girlfriend Denise (played by Carmen Ejogo), who works as a reporter, they piece together clues and uncover the true mastermind behind the criminal operation.
