The film begins with Ethan Hunt on vacation rock climbing in Utah when he is approached by his IMF (Impossible Missions Force) superior, Swanbeck (played by Anthony Hopkins). Swanbeck informs Ethan that a rogue IMF agent, Sean Ambrose (played by Dougray Scott), has stolen a deadly genetically engineered virus called Chimera and its antidote, Bellerophon, from a research lab.
The IMF team learns that Ambrose plans to sell the virus to a terrorist organization called the “Chimera Group.” Hunt is assigned to recruit Nyah Nordoff-Hall (played by Thandie Newton), a skilled thief and Ambrose’s former lover, to infiltrate Ambrose’s inner circle and stop him from releasing the virus.
