The story is set in a near-future where Earth is invaded by an alien race known as Mimics. Major William Cage (played by Tom Cruise), a military public relations officer with no combat experience, is forced into battle against the Mimics. During the battle, Cage is killed but inexplicably wakes up and finds himself reliving the previous day.
Cage discovers that he is caught in a time loop, reliving the same day every time he dies. With the help of experienced soldier Rita Vrataski (played by Emily Blunt), who once experienced a similar time loop, Cage begins to improve his combat skills and strategize to defeat the Mimics.

The movie concludes with Cage and Rita meeting again, having retained memories of their experiences in the time loop. The defeat of the Mimics and the breaking of the time loop lead to a hopeful future for humanity.
