The film is set in 18th century France and follows the story of Grégoire de Fronsac (played by Samuel Le Bihan), a naturalist and royal taxidermist, and his companion, Mani (played by Mark Dacascos), a Mohawk Iroquois who is skilled in combat. The two men are sent by the King to investigate a series of brutal killings in the province of Gévaudan, believed to be the work of a supernatural creature.
Upon their arrival in Gévaudan, Fronsac and Mani are met with skepticism and hostility from the local villagers, who are terrified of the mysterious beast. They are assisted in their investigation by Marquis Thomas d’Apcher (played by Jérémie Renier) and his sister, Marianne de Morangias (played by Émilie Dequenne).
As Fronsac and Mani delve deeper into the mystery, they uncover a complex web of intrigue and deception involving local nobles, religious fanatics, and corrupt officials. They soon realize that the beast is not what it seems and that the true culprits behind the killings are human.

In a climactic showdown, Fronsac and Mani confront de Morangias and his followers in a dramatic battle. With the help of Marianne and the local resistance, they defeat the cult and put an end to the reign of terror in Gévaudan.
In the aftermath of the conflict, Fronsac and Mani part ways, each returning to their respective homelands. Fronsac reflects on his experiences and the lessons he has learned, while Mani continues his journey, forever changed by his time in France.
