The story begins with Johnny English, a low-ranking British intelligence officer working for MI7, who dreams of becoming a suave and sophisticated secret agent like James Bond. Despite his lack of skill and competence, Johnny is promoted to the position of secret agent after the entire MI7 team is killed in a bombing.
Assigned to investigate the theft of the British Crown Jewels, Johnny is partnered with his assistant, Bough (played by Ben Miller), a competent and resourceful agent who often has to cover for Johnny’s mistakes. Together, they set out to uncover the identity of the mastermind behind the theft.
As Johnny delves deeper into the investigation, he encounters a mysterious French entrepreneur named Pascal Sauvage (played by John Malkovich), who is planning to steal the Crown Jewels in order to become the next King of England. With the help of his loyal assistant, Lorna Campbell (played by Natalie Imbruglia), Johnny sets out to stop Sauvage’s nefarious plot.
In a series of comedic misadventures, Johnny bumbles his way through a series of spy missions, inadvertently causing chaos and destruction wherever he goes. Despite his incompetence, Johnny’s unorthodox methods ultimately lead him to uncover Sauvage’s plan and prevent the theft of the Crown Jewels.
In the climax of the film, Johnny confronts Sauvage at a gala event where the Crown Jewels are being displayed. With the help of Bough and Lorna, Johnny foils Sauvage’s plan and apprehends him, saving the day and restoring his reputation as a secret agent.
In the end, Johnny is hailed as a hero by the British public, and he is promoted to the position of head of MI7. Despite his newfound success, Johnny remains the same lovable and bumbling agent, ready to take on whatever challenges come his way.
