The film begins with James Reese (played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a low-level employee at the U.S. Embassy in Paris, who aspires to become a field agent for the CIA. Reese is assigned to assist Charlie Wax (played by John Travolta), a brash and unconventional CIA operative who has been sent to Paris to investigate a potential terrorist threat.
As Reese accompanies Wax on his mission, he quickly learns that Wax is a no-nonsense operative who prefers to use extreme methods to achieve his objectives.
