Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

The film centers on Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn), a highly intelligent and socially awkward 11-year-old boy living in New York City. Oskar’s father, Thomas Schell (Tom Hanks), perished in the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attacks. After his father’s death, Oskar discovers a mysterious key in an envelope with the word “Black” written on it in his father’s belongings.

Driven by a desire to connect with his father and find meaning in the tragic loss, Oskar embarks on a quest to locate the lock that the key opens. Determined to meet every person with the last name “Black” in New York City, Oskar begins his journey, encountering various individuals and documenting his experiences.

Oskar’s journey becomes intertwined with his relationship with his mother, Linda Schell (Sandra Bullock), who is struggling with her grief and the strained communication with her son. The family also has a close connection with a mysterious mute man known as “The Renter” (Max von Sydow), who communicates through written notes and displays a key tattooed on his hand.

As Oskar’s quest progresses, he learns more about his father, his family, and the impact of loss on those around him. The film incorporates flashbacks to the time before the 9/11 attacks, revealing the deep connection between Oskar and his father.

In the climax, Oskar finally meets the last person on his list, Abby Black (Viola Davis), and discovers that she is the widow of a victim who also perished in the World Trade Center. The film explores themes of healing, forgiveness, and the ways people cope with trauma.

“Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for the performances, especially Thomas Horn’s, but criticism for its treatment of the 9/11 tragedy and its emotional manipulation. The film aims to portray the impact of loss and the human capacity for resilience and connection in the face of tragedy.
