The film revolves around the misadventures of Robert Grant (played by Jason Alexander), the uptight and stressed-out manager of the luxurious Majestic Hotel. Robert is determined to impress his boss, the eccentric Mrs. Dubrow (played by Faye Dunaway), in hopes of being promoted to general manager.
