The story picks up 20 years after the events of the first film. Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) has been in a mental institution, pretending to be catatonic as a prank on his best friend Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels). When Harry visits Lloyd, he reveals that he needs a new kidney, and he hopes to find a long-lost daughter he never knew about who might be a potential donor.
The duo embarks on a road trip to find Harry’s daughter, Penny (Rachel Melvin), who was given up for adoption. Along the way, they encounter various absurd and humorous situations, including a plot involving a valuable invention and encounters with familiar faces from the first film.
As they reach Penny’s adoptive parents, they discover that she is not the biological daughter of Harry. However, they uncover that Harry has a daughter, Fraida Felcher (Kathleen Turner), with whom Lloyd had a romantic history. In a twist, Fraida reveals that she and Harry had a brief encounter years ago, making her the biological mother of Penny.
The film concludes with Lloyd and Harry accepting their familial connection. Despite the over-the-top antics, they celebrate the newfound family ties in their unique and comical way.
“Dumb and Dumber To” received mixed reviews from critics but was praised for the performances of Carrey and Daniels and the nostalgic throwback to the humor of the original film. However, some critics felt it didn’t quite capture the magic of the first installment.
