Don’t Worry Darling

The psychological thriller concludes with Alice escaping the 1950s simulation of Victory after realizing the idyllic community is a facade created by her husband Jack. When Jack tries to stop her from leaving, a fight ensues and Alice kills him with a shard of glass. The company mastermind, Frank, appears and explains the virtual reality was meant to trap housewives in a pleasurable prison. But Alice breaks free, reuniting with her real-world self. The ending implies Alice shattered the illusion of Victory and regained autonomy from the patriarchal control of her husband and his employer. Though left a widow, she emerges empowered after seeing through the sexist, conformist utopia designed to pacify her. The finale suggests the truth enabled Alice to reclaim her identity and independence. By fighting back against domestic oppression, even within a simulation, she gained freedom from the forces that sought to manipulate and constrain her aspirations. Alice awoke from the nightmare of conformity to a future filled with possibility and a renewed sense of self-determination. Her defiance of Victory’s illusory comforts conveys an inspirational message of resisting submission and embracing one’s own power.
