The story begins with Li Mu Bai (played by Chow Yun-fat), a skilled warrior and master swordsman, entrusting his legendary sword, the Green Destiny, to his close friend Yu Shu Lien (played by Michelle Yeoh). Li Mu Bai reveals that he plans to retire from his life as a warrior and hopes to pass on the sword to Sir Te (played by Sihung Lung), a respected nobleman and friend.
Meanwhile, Yu Shu Lien is also dealing with her own conflicted feelings towards Li Mu Bai, whom she secretly loves but cannot be with due to societal constraints and obligations. Their relationship is further complicated by the arrival of Jen Yu (played by Zhang Ziyi), the daughter of a nobleman who dreams of a life of adventure and freedom.
