Terry McCaleb (played by Clint Eastwood) is an FBI profiler who suffers a heart attack while chasing a serial killer known as the “Code Killer.” After receiving a heart transplant, Terry retires from the FBI and moves to a houseboat in Los Angeles to live a quiet life.
However, Terry’s peaceful existence is disrupted when a woman named Graciela Rivers (played by Wanda De Jesus) approaches him with a request for help. Graciela’s sister Gloria was murdered in a convenience store robbery, and Graciela believes that Gloria’s death was not a random act of violence but rather a planned murder.
Reluctantly, Terry agrees to look into Gloria’s death, and he soon discovers that there are similarities between Gloria’s murder and the killings committed by the Code Killer. Convinced that there is a connection, Terry begins to investigate the case, despite warnings from his doctor and his former colleague, Detective Jaye Winston (played by Tina Lifford).
As Terry delves deeper into the investigation, he uncovers a web of deception and betrayal that leads him to a wealthy art dealer named James Cordell (played by Jeff Daniels). Terry becomes convinced that Cordell is somehow involved in Gloria’s murder and the killings committed by the Code Killer.
With the help of Graciela, Terry sets out to gather evidence against Cordell and bring him to justice. Along the way, Terry must confront his own mortality and come to terms with the fact that his new heart may not be as strong as he thought.
