I.S.S.

“I.S.S.,” set aboard the US/Russia International Space Station, explores the chilling notion that in space, even a whisper may carry weighty consequences, contrasting with the famous line from “Alien” about screaming unheard in space.

The film unfolds as an efficient 90-minute thrill ride, meticulously constructed like a Jenga tower, with every dialogue line hinting at impending tension or terror. The stellar cast, including Chris Messina, Ariana DeBose, and John Gallagher Jr. as the American crew, alongside Masha Mashkova, Costa Ronin, and Pilou Asbæk as the Russian crew, elevates the suspense. Geoff Wallace’s impeccable production design and captivating special effects add to the immersive experience, capturing the weightless environment and its surprising nuances, like floating droplets of blood.

Similar to “Alien,” “I.S.S.” generates immediate tension through its confined setting far from Earth. The arrival of scientist Kira and officer Christian allows us to experience weightlessness alongside them and witness the intricate dynamics among the crew. Workplace camaraderie masks underlying tensions, magnified by their dependence on each other for survival.

As a cryptic message signals impending danger on Earth, trust among the crew fractures, and alliances shift in a desperate bid for survival. The film masterfully navigates the psychological turmoil and technical challenges, keeping the tension taut and the plot briskly moving forward. Ultimately, “I.S.S.” delivers a gripping space thriller that resonates with its exploration of human dynamics under extreme pressure.
