Mayhem!

An exclamation point in a title is meant to evoke excitement and anticipation. The film “Mayhem!” promises high-octane action and adrenaline-pumping thrills. However, it falls short of delivering on this promise, leaving viewers questioning whether it should have been titled “Mayhem?” instead.

Directed by Xavier Gens, known for his work on “Frontier(s)” and the “Hitman” adaptation, “Mayhem!” begins with a promising prologue featuring Sam, a skilled fighter with a troubled past. After a violent encounter, Sam flees to Thailand, where he starts a new life with Mia and her daughter, Dara.

Years later, Sam’s peaceful existence is shattered when a crime lord named Narong targets his family, resulting in a tragic loss. As Sam seeks vengeance against those who destroyed his life, the film transitions into a gritty revenge thriller. However, it takes nearly 45 minutes to reach this point, leaving audiences impatient for the action to begin.

Once the action kicks in, Gens demonstrates his prowess with intense fight sequences, particularly in a well-choreographed brawl in a mansion and a gripping showdown in an elevator. Lead actor Nassim Lyes shines in these action-packed scenes, although his performance falters in the dramatic moments.

Despite its impressive action sequences, “Mayhem!” struggles to find its footing narratively, oscillating between gritty realism and over-the-top escapism. The film’s attempt to tackle issues like sex trafficking feels exploitative and detracts from its entertainment value.

In the end, “Mayhem!” falls short of its potential, weighed down by convoluted storytelling and shallow characterizations. Perhaps a simpler approach, akin to “John Wick,” would have served the film better, allowing its action-packed moments to shine without unnecessary distractions.
