The film follows the story of Henry Biggs (played by Courtney B. Vance), a devoted pastor struggling to save his church and his marriage, and Dudley (played by Denzel Washington), an angel sent to help him.
Henry is the pastor of a struggling inner-city church in New York City. He is dedicated to his congregation but finds himself overwhelmed by the pressures of his job, causing him to neglect his wife, Julia (played by Whitney Houston), and their son Jeremiah (played by Justin Pierre Edmund).
As Henry’s faith begins to waver, an angel named Dudley arrives in response to Julia’s prayers for help. Dudley takes on the guise of a charming and charismatic young man and begins to assist Henry in his duties as pastor.
Despite Henry’s initial skepticism, Dudley proves to be a godsend, helping him revitalize the church and reconnect with his family. However, as Dudley spends more time with Julia, Henry becomes increasingly jealous and insecure, fearing that he will lose his wife to the charming newcomer.
In the climax of the film, Henry confronts Dudley about his feelings for Julia, and Dudley reveals his true identity as an angel. Henry is initially shocked but ultimately comes to accept Dudley’s presence in their lives and the role he has played in helping them find happiness and fulfillment.
In the end, Henry and Julia reaffirm their love for each other, and the church is saved from closure. Dudley bids farewell to the Biggs family, having completed his mission on Earth, and returns to the heavens.
