The film is set in Chicago, where a series of gruesome murders occur at the Field Museum of Natural History. Lieutenant Vincent D’Agosta (played by Tom Sizemore) is assigned to investigate the case, along with Dr. Margo Green (played by Penelope Ann Miller), an evolutionary biologist who works at the museum.
As the investigation progresses, D’Agosta and Dr. Green discover that the murders are connected to an ancient creature known as the “Kothoga,” which was brought to the museum as part of an exhibit. The Kothoga is a monstrous creature that possesses incredible strength and agility, and it preys on humans to feed its insatiable hunger.
In the climax of the film, D’Agosta and Dr. Green confront the Kothoga in the museum’s underground tunnels. Armed with knowledge from their research, as well as makeshift weapons, they engage in a tense and terrifying battle with the creature.
Despite facing numerous obstacles and close calls, D’Agosta and Dr. Green ultimately manage to defeat the Kothoga and save themselves from certain death. In the process, they also prevent the creature from escaping into the city and causing further chaos.
In the end, D’Agosta and Dr. Green emerge as heroes, having successfully thwarted the Kothoga’s rampage and saved countless lives. However, the experience leaves them traumatized, and they are haunted by the horrors they witnessed in the museum.
“The Relic” is praised for its atmospheric tension, gruesome special effects, and suspenseful sequences. It effectively blends elements of horror and science fiction, creating a chilling and thrilling experience for audiences.
