Excess Baggage

The film follows the story of Emily T. Hope (played by Alicia Silverstone), a wealthy and rebellious young woman who fakes her own kidnapping in an attempt to gain attention from her indifferent father, Alexander (played by Jack Thompson). Emily plans to hide out in the trunk of her car until her father pays the ransom, but her scheme takes an unexpected turn when Vincent Roche (played by Benicio Del Toro), a car thief, steals her car with her inside.

Initially, Vincent is unaware that Emily is in the trunk, and he plans to strip the car for parts. However, when he discovers Emily, he becomes entangled in her elaborate scheme. Emily tries to convince Vincent to help her with her plan, but he is reluctant to get involved in her drama.

As Vincent and Emily spend time together, they begin to develop an unexpected bond, and Emily starts to question her motives for faking her kidnapping. Meanwhile, Alexander hires a private investigator, Ray (played by Christopher Walken), to find Emily and bring her home safely.

As the film progresses, Emily and Vincent find themselves pursued by both Ray and the police, who believe Vincent is responsible for Emily’s kidnapping. As they evade capture, Emily and Vincent’s relationship deepens, and they begin to realize that they may have genuine feelings for each other.

In the climax of the film, Emily and Vincent confront Alexander and Ray, who have tracked them down to a warehouse. Emily reveals the truth about her kidnapping scheme, and Vincent confesses his role in helping her. Alexander is initially angry and disappointed, but he eventually realizes the depth of Emily’s unhappiness and apologizes for his neglect.

In the end, Emily decides to leave with Vincent, and the two drive off together, leaving behind Emily’s life of privilege and embarking on a new adventure together.

“Excess Baggage” is praised for its lighthearted humor, charming performances, and playful take on the romantic comedy genre.
