The film follows John Lee (played by Chow Yun-fat), a professional assassin who refuses to carry out an assignment to kill the young son of a police officer. In retaliation, the crime boss Terence Wei (played by Kenneth Tsang) orders a hit on John’s family in China, forcing him to flee to the United States to seek refuge.
In the United States, John is approached by Meg Coburn (played by Mira Sorvino), a skilled forger who owes a debt to Wei. Wei offers to forgive Meg’s debt if she helps him eliminate John. However, Meg refuses to comply and instead teams up with John to evade Wei’s assassins and protect him from harm.
As John and Meg go on the run, they are pursued by Wei’s ruthless henchmen, including the deadly assassin Michael Kogan (played by Michael Rooker) and the skilled hitman Collins (played by Danny Trejo). Along the way, they encounter various obstacles and challenges as they attempt to stay one step ahead of their pursuers.
As the stakes escalate, John and Meg form a bond based on mutual trust and respect, despite their initial reluctance to work together. They rely on their wits and resourcefulness to outsmart Wei’s men and uncover the truth behind the conspiracy against them.
In a climactic showdown, John confronts Wei and his men in a final battle to protect Meg and seek justice for his family. With Meg’s help, John defeats Wei and his henchmen, avenging his family’s death and ensuring his own survival.
In the end, John and Meg part ways, each going their separate paths. John returns to China to confront his past and seek redemption for his actions, while Meg begins a new life free from the dangers of the criminal underworld.
