The story begins in ancient Egypt, where the High Priest Imhotep engages in a forbidden romance with Anck-Su-Namun, the mistress of the Pharaoh. When the Pharaoh discovers their affair, Imhotep is cursed to endure the punishment of being mummified alive. Anck-Su-Namun takes her own life in grief.
Centuries later, in 1926, a group of American treasure hunters led by Rick O’Connell discovers the hidden city of Hamunaptra, the resting place of Imhotep. They unwittingly awaken the mummy and unleash a series of events that threaten the world.
Imhotep, now resurrected and seeking immortality, begins to wreak havoc, using his powers to raise an army of the undead. He plans to resurrect Anck-Su-Namun by sacrificing Evelyn Carnahan, a librarian who bears a striking resemblance to her.
Rick, Evelyn, and her brother Jonathan team up with the Medjai, a group of Egyptian warriors led by Ardeth Bay, to stop Imhotep. Along the way, they encounter numerous obstacles, including treacherous traps within the ancient city and battles with Imhotep’s undead minions.
