The film revolves around two fallen angels, Loki (played by Matt Damon) and Bartleby (played by Ben Affleck), who have been banished from Heaven and are living in Wisconsin. They discover a loophole in Catholic doctrine that would allow them to return to Heaven if they pass through a church’s archway during a special ceremony in New Jersey.
However, their plan poses a threat to the balance of the universe and could lead to the destruction of existence. To prevent this, the angel Metatron (played by Alan Rickman) enlists the help of Bethany Sloane (played by Linda Fiorentino), a disillusioned Catholic woman, to stop Loki and Bartleby.
Bethany embarks on a journey with a group of unconventional allies, including Jay (played by Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (played by Kevin Smith), two stoners who sell marijuana outside a convenience store, and Rufus (played by Chris Rock), the thirteenth apostle who was left out of the Bible because he was black.
Along the way, they encounter various obstacles, including a demon named Azrael (played by Jason Lee), who seeks to manipulate the situation for his own gain. They also clash with the Catholic Church, represented by Cardinal Ignatius Glick (played by George Carlin), who views the situation as an opportunity to modernize the Church’s image.
As Bethany and her allies race to stop Loki and Bartleby, they confront their own doubts and fears, ultimately coming to terms with their faith and beliefs. In a climactic showdown at the church in New Jersey, Bethany confronts Loki and Bartleby, urging them to embrace forgiveness and redemption.
In the end, Bartleby chooses to sacrifice himself rather than continue with his destructive plan. His selfless act restores the balance of the universe and allows Bethany to fulfill her destiny as the savior of humanity. The film concludes with Bethany reflecting on her journey and finding renewed faith in herself and the world around her.
