The film follows a team of scientists at an underwater research facility called Aquatica, where they are conducting experiments on genetically engineered sharks to harvest their brain tissue for medical research. Dr. Susan McAlester (played by Saffron Burrows) leads the project, which aims to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
As the experiments progress, the sharks become smarter and more aggressive than anticipated. During a routine procedure, one of the sharks attacks a scientist, prompting McAlester to enlist the help of shark wrangler Carter Blake (played by Thomas Jane) and his team to capture it.
As they work to contain the sharks, a series of catastrophic events unfold, including a violent storm that damages the facility and compromises its structural integrity. The sharks, now free to roam the flooded facility, begin to hunt down the remaining survivors one by one.
Amidst the chaos, the group must navigate the treacherous underwater environment and outsmart the highly intelligent sharks in order to survive. They face numerous challenges, including limited oxygen supplies, malfunctioning equipment, and the sharks’ relentless pursuit.
In a series of intense and suspenseful encounters, the survivors manage to evade the sharks and make their way to the surface. However, just as they are about to escape, they discover that one of the sharks has followed them and is wreaking havoc on their rescue vessel.
In the film’s climax, McAlester sacrifices herself to save the others, luring the shark away from the vessel and triggering an explosion that kills both her and the shark. The remaining survivors, including Blake and Aquatica’s financier Russell Franklin (played by Samuel L. Jackson), are eventually rescued by a passing helicopter.
As the film concludes, Blake reflects on the events that transpired and the sacrifices made by McAlester and the others. Despite the ordeal, he remains determined to continue his work and find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
