The story begins with the transport spaceship Hunter-Gratzner crash-landing on a desert planet after encountering a meteor shower. Among the survivors are the pilot, Carolyn Fry (played by Radha Mitchell), a convicted murderer, Richard B. Riddick (played by Vin Diesel), and several other passengers.
As the survivors assess their situation, they discover that the planet is constantly bathed in sunlight due to its three suns. However, they soon realize that the planet undergoes a total eclipse every 22 years, plunging it into darkness for an extended period.
Before the eclipse occurs, the survivors must find a way to repair their damaged ship and escape the planet. However, they soon encounter a deadly threat in the form of nocturnal creatures called “Bioraptors,” which emerge in the darkness to hunt their prey.
As the eclipse approaches, tensions rise among the survivors, particularly between Riddick, who possesses enhanced vision that allows him to see in the dark, and the others. Despite their differences, the group must work together to survive and escape the planet.
As the survivors attempt to repair their ship, they are hunted by the Bioraptors, who pick them off one by one. Along the way, they encounter a group of local inhabitants, the desert-dwelling Nomadics, who provide them with shelter and assistance.
As the eclipse begins, the survivors make a desperate bid to reach their ship and escape the planet before they are overrun by the Bioraptors. In a thrilling climax, they battle the creatures and face numerous obstacles before finally reaching safety.
In the end, only a few survivors manage to escape the planet, including Fry and Riddick. However, Riddick opts to remain behind, believing that he is better suited to survive on the dangerous planet than in civilization.
