The film begins in 1999, where we meet John Sullivan (played by Jim Caviezel), a New York City police detective who is struggling to come to terms with the death of his firefighter father, Frank Sullivan (played by Dennis Quaid), in a warehouse fire 30 years earlier, in 1969. John discovers his father’s old ham radio in the family’s garage and, during the occurrence of the aurora borealis, he manages to establish a connection with his father’s past self.

Through their communications, John and Frank realize that they are speaking across time. They use this opportunity to share information about their lives, allowing Frank to avoid certain tragedies and altering the course of history. However, their actions have unintended consequences, leading to a series of changes in the present timeline.

As they continue to communicate, John and Frank work together to solve a string of murders that occurred in both timelines, involving a serial killer known as the “Nightingale Killer.” With Frank’s knowledge of the past and John’s investigative skills in the present, they uncover crucial evidence that helps them track down the killer and prevent further deaths.

Meanwhile, John reconnects with his childhood sweetheart, Samantha “Satch” Sullivan (played by Elizabeth Mitchell), who is also affected by the changes in the timeline. Together, they navigate the complexities of their altered reality and strive to set things right.

In a climactic showdown, John confronts the Nightingale Killer and manages to rescue his own mother from being killed, altering the timeline once again. However, this act leads to Frank sacrificing himself to save John from the warehouse fire, restoring the original timeline but leaving John with only faint memories of his experiences with his father.

In the end, John realizes the importance of cherishing the memories of his father and appreciating the time they shared, even if it was through a miraculous connection across time.

“Frequency” is a gripping and emotionally resonant film that explores themes of family, love, and the power of connection. With its clever premise, suspenseful storyline, and heartfelt performances, the film captivates audiences and leaves a lasting impression long after the credits roll.
