The film begins with Novalee Nation (played by Natalie Portman), a pregnant teenager from Tennessee, traveling with her boyfriend, Willy Jack Pickens (played by Dylan Bruno), to California in search of a better life. Along the way, they stop at a Walmart in Sequoyah, Oklahoma, where Novalee goes inside to use the restroom while Willy Jack buys beer.
However, when Novalee emerges from the store, she discovers that Willy Jack has abandoned her, leaving her alone and pregnant in the Walmart parking lot.
