The film begins with the crash landing of a meteor in the desert near Glen Canyon, Arizona. Two community college professors, Dr. Ira Kane (played by David Duchovny) and Dr. Harry Block (played by Orlando Jones), investigate the crash site and discover evidence of extraterrestrial life in the form of single-celled organisms.
As the organisms rapidly evolve into multicellular organisms and eventually into complex creatures, Dr. Kane and Dr. Block are joined by CDC epidemiologist Dr. Allison Reed (played by Julianne Moore) to study and contain the alien threat. They name the creatures “alien nitrogen-based lifeforms” or “nitrogen-based lifeforms” (NBLs) due to their unique biology.
The NBLs quickly spread and begin to wreak havoc on the local ecosystem, devouring everything in their path and posing a threat to human civilization. Dr. Kane, Dr. Block, and Dr. Reed team up with Wayne Green (played by Seann William Scott), a clumsy firefighter with dreams of becoming a member of the military, to combat the aliens.
As the NBLs continue to evolve and adapt to their environment, the team races against time to find a way to stop them. They discover that selenium, a common element found in shampoo, is toxic to the aliens and develop a plan to use it to destroy them.
In a series of hilarious and action-packed sequences, the team battles the NBLs using unconventional methods and makeshift weapons, including flamethrowers, fire extinguishers, and even head and shoulders shampoo.
In a climactic showdown, the team faces off against a massive NBL queen in an underground cave system. Using their wit and ingenuity, they manage to defeat the queen and destroy the remaining NBLs, saving the world from destruction.
In the end, Dr. Kane, Dr. Block, Dr. Reed, and Wayne are hailed as heroes for their bravery and resourcefulness in stopping the alien invasion. They return to their normal lives, knowing that they have successfully averted a global catastrophe.
