About a Boy

The story revolves around Will Freeman (Hugh Grant), a charming and affluent Londoner who lives a carefree and hedonistic lifestyle, devoid of any meaningful commitments or responsibilities. Will prides himself on his bachelor status and spends his days indulging in leisurely pursuits and pursuing casual relationships with women.

Meanwhile, Marcus Brewer (Nicholas Hoult) is a socially awkward and introverted twelve-year-old boy who lives with his single mother, Fiona (Toni Collette). Marcus struggles to fit in at school and is often bullied by his classmates, leading to feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Their lives intersect when Marcus and Fiona move into the same apartment building as Will. Marcus is drawn to Will’s seemingly carefree lifestyle and views him as a potential father figure, while Will sees Marcus as an opportunity to meet women by pretending to be a single parent.

Despite their initial reluctance, Will and Marcus form an unlikely friendship based on mutual support and understanding. Will helps Marcus navigate the challenges of adolescence, offering advice on how to fit in at school and overcome his bullies, while Marcus teaches Will the value of genuine connections and emotional intimacy.

As their bond deepens, Will begins to reassess his priorities and reevaluate his approach to life. He develops romantic feelings for Rachel (Rachel Weisz), a single mother he meets at a support group, and struggles with his fear of commitment and emotional vulnerability.

Meanwhile, Marcus becomes increasingly concerned about his mother’s mental health and attempts to support her through her struggles. He learns to embrace his individuality and finds the courage to stand up for himself and others, culminating in a heartfelt performance at his school’s talent show.

In the end, Will and Marcus both undergo significant personal growth and transformation. Will learns to embrace the responsibilities and rewards of genuine relationships, while Marcus discovers the importance of self-acceptance and the power of friendship.
