The film begins with Iceman Chambers (played by Ving Rhames), the undefeated heavyweight boxing champion, being arrested for rape. He is sent to Sweetwater State Penitentiary, a maximum-security prison, where he quickly establishes himself as the dominant fighter in the inmate boxing matches.
Meanwhile, Monroe Hutchen (played by Wesley Snipes), a former heavyweight contender, is also serving time at Sweetwater for a crime he claims he didn’t commit. Hutchen is a skilled boxer with a strong sense of honor and integrity, and he is respected by his fellow inmates.
The prison’s boxing promoter, Mendy Ripstein (played by Peter Falk), sees an opportunity to make a profit by arranging a match between Chambers and Hutchen. Despite Hutchen’s initial reluctance, he agrees to the fight in order to prove himself and gain his freedom.
