Kelvin soon learns that the crew has been affected by the planet Solaris, which has the ability to materialize physical manifestations of their deepest fears and desires. Kelvin is confronted with the appearance of his deceased wife, Rheya (played by Natascha McElhone), who committed suicide years earlier. Despite knowing that she is not real, Kelvin is unable to resist his feelings for Rheya and becomes determined to unravel the mysteries of Solaris.

As Kelvin grapples with his past and his complicated relationship with Rheya, he becomes increasingly isolated and consumed by his obsession with understanding the nature of Solaris.
