The story begins with a series of bizarre and catastrophic events occurring around the world, including birds falling from the sky and microwave ovens exploding. It is soon discovered that the Earth’s core has stopped spinning, causing the planet’s electromagnetic field to weaken and exposing it to deadly solar radiation.
To prevent a global catastrophe, a team of scientists and astronauts is assembled to embark on a daring mission to restart the Earth’s core. The team is led by Dr. Josh Keyes (played by Aaron Eckhart), a geophysicist, and Dr. Serge Leveque (played by Tchéky Karyo), a French nuclear weapons expert.
