The story centers on Roy Waller (played by Nicolas Cage), a neurotic and reclusive con artist who suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder. Roy’s life revolves around his meticulous routines and elaborate scams, which he executes with the help of his partner, Frank Mercer (played by Sam Rockwell).
One day, Roy’s carefully controlled world is turned upside down when his teenage daughter, Angela (played by Alison Lohman), shows up on his doorstep. Roy had no idea that he had a daughter, as Angela’s mother, Heather (played by Melora Walters), left him years ago without telling him about the pregnancy.
Despite his initial reluctance, Roy agrees to let Angela stay with him for a while. As they spend time together, Roy begins to bond with Angela and learns to let go of some of his rigid routines and obsessions.
Meanwhile, Roy and Frank are planning their biggest con yet – a scheme to swindle a wealthy businessman named Chuck Frechette (played by Bruce McGill) out of millions of dollars. However, as they delve deeper into the scheme, Roy’s complicated relationship with Angela threatens to derail their plans.
In the climax of the film, Roy’s con on Chuck Frechette goes awry when Angela discovers the truth about her father’s criminal activities. Feeling betrayed and hurt, Angela leaves Roy and goes to live with her mother.
Devastated by Angela’s departure, Roy spirals into a deep depression and struggles to cope with his feelings of guilt and regret. He realizes that he has lost the one person who truly cared about him, and he is determined to make amends and win her back.
In the end, Roy decides to turn himself in to the authorities and confess to his crimes. He hopes that by facing the consequences of his actions, he can earn Angela’s forgiveness and rebuild their relationship.
