The film begins with a flashback to the time of Merlin, the legendary sorcerer, who defeated the evil sorceress Morgana le Fay and imprisoned her in a magical nesting doll called the Grimhold. Merlin entrusts his apprentice, Balthazar Blake (played by Nicolas Cage), with the task of finding the Prime Merlinean, the only one capable of defeating Morgana should she ever escape.
In present-day Manhattan, a young physics student named Dave Stutler (played by Jay Baruchel) is thrust into the world of magic when he encounters Balthazar and inadvertently releases the evil sorcerer Maxim Horvath (played by Alfred Molina) from the Grimhold. Balthazar reveals to Dave that he is the Prime Merlinean and must now help him stop Horvath and prevent Morgana’s return.

With the threat of Morgana vanquished, Dave and Becky share a kiss and begin a romantic relationship. Balthazar congratulates Dave on his victory and officially declares him a master sorcerer, ready to continue Merlin’s legacy and protect the world from dark forces.
