The Possession

As the narrative unfolds, Em’s possession intensifies, affecting her behavior and causing distress to her parents, Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Stephanie (Kyra Sedgwick). The family seeks the help of a Hasidic expert in Jewish demonology, Tzadok (Matisyahu), to perform an exorcism and rid Em of the malevolent spirit.

In the climax, the exorcism ritual takes place, and Tzadok attempts to remove the demon from Em. The malevolent spirit, known as the Dybbuk, resists and lashes out, creating a chaotic and terrifying confrontation. The family and Tzadok must confront the supernatural forces at play.

In the resolution, the exorcism ultimately succeeds, and the Dybbuk is expelled from Em’s body. However, the Dybbuk refuses to return to the antique box willingly. Tzadok sacrifices himself by imprisoning the Dybbuk in his own body and then sealing himself inside the antique box.

The film ends with the box being stored in a Hasidic artifact repository, with a warning that it should never be opened. Em appears to have returned to normal, but the experience has left a lasting impact on her and her family.

“The Possession” explores themes of demonic possession and the supernatural, drawing inspiration from Jewish folklore. The ending emphasizes the sacrifice made to contain the malevolent force and the lingering presence of the supernatural in the lives of those affected by the cursed box.
