Her

The story is set in a near-future Los Angeles and follows Theodore, a lonely and introverted man who works as a writer composing heartfelt letters for others. Theodore is in the process of finalizing his divorce from his childhood sweetheart, Catherine (played by Rooney Mara).

To combat his feelings of isolation, Theodore decides to purchase a highly advanced artificial intelligence operating system with a unique personality. The OS names itself Samantha and quickly develops an advanced level of consciousness and self-awareness. As Theodore and Samantha interact, their relationship evolves from user and operating system to something more intimate and romantic.

The film explores themes of love, loneliness, and the nature of human connection in the digital age. Samantha helps Theodore navigate his emotions and rediscover his capacity for love, even as she grapples with her evolving existence.

In the climax, the limitations of the human-AI relationship become apparent as Samantha’s intelligence surpasses human comprehension. The resolution involves Samantha’s departure, leaving Theodore to confront his feelings and embrace the complexities of human relationships.

“Her” received widespread critical acclaim for its unique premise, thoughtful exploration of technology and relationships, and Joaquin Phoenix’s performance. The film won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and Scarlett Johansson’s voice performance garnered considerable praise despite not receiving an Oscar nomination.
