The story is set in a magical forest divided into the Dark Forest, ruled by the evil Bog King (voiced by Alan Cumming), and the Fairy Kingdom, ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy (voiced by Kristin Chenoweth). The Bog King despises love and has forbidden any form of romance, as it is associated with the magical love potion.
Marianne (voiced by Evan Rachel Wood), a fairy princess, believes in true love until she discovers her fiancé, Roland (voiced by Sam Palladio), cheating on her. Heartbroken, she becomes a cynic about love.
Meanwhile, in the Dark Forest, a kind-hearted elf named Sunny (voiced by Elijah Kelley) accidentally creates a love potion. Chaos ensues as various creatures, both good and evil, become affected by the potion.
In the climax, Marianne, Bog King, and the others must work together to save the kingdom from the effects of the love potion and overcome the prejudices that have kept them apart. The film culminates in a celebration of love and acceptance.
“Strange Magic” features a soundtrack of popular songs, rearranged to fit the narrative, and received mixed reviews for its unique visual style and whimsical storytelling. While some appreciated its musical elements and positive themes, others found fault in the narrative execution. Despite the mixed reception, the film has gained a cult following over the years.
