Le dernier loup

The story is set in the 1960s during China’s Cultural Revolution. Chen Zhen (played by Feng Shaofeng), a young student from Beijing, is sent to Inner Mongolia to live among the nomadic herdsmen as part of the government’s campaign to spread revolutionary ideals.

Chen becomes fascinated by the wolves that roam the grasslands and develops a strong connection with a wolf cub. The herdsmen view the wolves as a threat to their livestock, but Chen sees them as a vital part of the ecosystem.

As the Chinese government encourages the extermination of wolves, tensions rise between the nomads and the authorities. Chen faces a moral dilemma as he is torn between his loyalty to the nomads and his duty to the government. The film explores themes of nature, culture clash, and the impact of human actions on the environment.

In the climax, a large-scale wolf hunt takes place, leading to the deaths of many wolves and a dramatic confrontation between Chen and government officials. The film concludes with a symbolic gesture that reflects the struggle between civilization and nature.

“Le Dernier Loup” received praise for its breathtaking cinematography, showcasing the vast landscapes of Inner Mongolia, and its exploration of the complex relationship between humans and nature. It also highlights the challenges faced by traditional nomadic cultures during a period of significant political and social change.
