Amityville: The Awakening

In “Amityville: The Awakening” (2017), the story follows a single mother, Joan (Jennifer Jason Leigh), and her three children, Belle (Bella Thorne), Juliet (Mckenna Grace), and James (Cameron Monaghan), who move into a seemingly idyllic house in Amityville. However, they soon discover that the house has a dark history, and supernatural occurrences begin to disturb their lives.

As the plot unfolds, it is revealed that James has been in a coma since the family moved in, and the house has a malevolent influence that feeds on negative energy. Belle becomes increasingly suspicious and seeks the help of a fellow student, Terrence (Thomas Mann), who is knowledgeable about the Amityville haunting.

In the climax, Belle confronts the malevolent force in an attempt to save her family. It is unveiled that the movies about the Amityville haunting exist in their world, and the supernatural occurrences are being manipulated by the force to generate fear.

The ending takes a metafictional turn as Belle, after facing various horrors, decides to confront the entity. The entity tries to lure her into accepting a deal, offering her a reality where her family is intact and happy. However, Belle rejects the illusion and chooses to face the painful truth.

The movie ends with Belle waking up in a mental institution, revealing that her experiences in the house were a part of her imagination and delusions. James, who was previously in a coma, wakes up, and the family is reunited. However, there is a hint of ambiguity as Belle notices a subtle change in the environment, suggesting that the malevolent force might still have a lingering presence.
